Tabasco repairs

How to fix laminated rib

Last winter (2007/2008) we took our Tabasco to the shipyard, where they replaced old spoiled wooden ribs by laminate ones. Both sides of the sliding keel. It was professionally repaired, very nice but quite expensive. We also discussed the repair of the distant place after the sliding keel but they refused since it was too far or they would remove the deck (very expensive). From the first sight, it was clear that this rib is out..

I checked the place in the winter and I found a wood that is like a sponge. During cold winter, it got frozen and the laminate cover was opening more than before. When it went warmer, I checked it deeply. The wooden rib was completely spoiled, like a dust and sand. I spent many days with thinking about the repairs but I could not find anything on the web.

Later on, I prepared tools for distant work J I used only very limited power and I removed 85% of the wooden rib (to get 100% it would be difficult I was afraid not to damage the bottom). Unfortunately, I do not know if the wood continues into back area or fixed keel but the part I touched was completely damaged.

As I saw the work in the shipyard, I prepared 6 stripes from the laminate that I intended to fold on themselves. The stripes were different size to complete the missing part of the wooden rib and to merge and cover it.

The long-distance work with the laminate was easier than I expected. The problem was the smell. I was able to work 10 or 15minutes in one round to survive and then get 30minutes break. The result is seen on the pictures. It is not perfect but I hope it will be enough. At least it can increase the rigidity that was lost with the spoiled wooden rib.

I try to get recommended temperature about 18 to 20C for the laminate. Now, it is about 15C during day and about 8C at night. Therefore, I used hot-air heater to increase the temperature in the boat, at least for 5 or 6 hours to get 25-30C. It looks that the laminate is solid.

That smell was really awful :-) Today I finished. Uf. Yes, It would be nice

Any comments welcomed :-))
Kind regards
Jaroslav

C'est hélas un endroit ou l'eau stagne souvent dans le Tabasco, l'un des rares défauts de se merveilleux voilier. Jaroslav fait bien de veiller au grain ..
